Clay Is Hiring an Accountant to Automate the Accounting

Clay, the $5B go-to-market software company whose customers include Anthropic and Google, is hiring an accountant. Five or more years, public accounting included, someone who "has owned a close, managed reconciliations, and dealt with messy real-world data," CPA preferred. The same posting requires proficiency in SQL and "demonstrated use of AI tools (Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT, or similar) to accelerate and improve accounting or finance work." A CPA who writes SQL and can show their work in Claude. The company states the belief behind the role plainly: "the future of accounting is not just about closing the books accurately; it is about closing them intelligently."

The Accounting Engineer is a new discipline we are defining from the ground up. It sits at the intersection of three historically separate worlds: accounting, finance systems and data. The connective tissue between all three is AI.

This person owns the monthly close end-to-end, journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting, and also owns the company's ERP and finance systems, and also builds what the posting calls "AI-powered workflows (Claude, Cursor, etc.) to automate reconciliations, variance analysis, and close tasks." The measure of success is blunt: "the goal is a shorter close every quarter." The accountant and the person automating the accountant's work are the same hire.

The posting is written for accountants, and it pitches the role as a better version of the job they already have. It promises "exposure across the organization that a traditional accounting role simply does not offer," and it heads off the suspicion that this is two jobs stapled together: "This is not a hybrid role as an afterthought; it is an intentional choice about how Clay's accounting function will scale."

Across every company we track, five open postings have accounting engineer in the title, and the words usually mean something different. Amazon has three openings for a "Software Dev Engineer, Accounting Engineering," and State Street has a "Head of Investment Accounting Engineering." Those are standard software engineering jobs. "Accounting Engineering" is the name of the team that builds the finance systems, and the engineers on it write code that accountants elsewhere in the company use. Clay's is the only posting where the accountant and the engineer are meant to be one person, and the only one that calls itself a new discipline.

Over 300K accountants left the field between 2019 and 2022, and accounting degrees and CPA candidates have been declining since the mid-2010s, a shortage the profession's own institutions describe as a crisis. Clay's posting reads like one company's answer to that arithmetic.
